Occultus Earth is a modern day horror novel created from a series of notes and diaries covering the last days before the millennium. Found beneath the floorboards of an abandoned house belonging to a small press publishing company, the novel is accompanied by all the trappings of evidence, news gathering and reportage that sets out to unmask supposed dark forces in our midst. Inspired, in part, by the extraordinary conspiracy theories found in Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum, and the part horror story, part philosophical meditation of Mark Z. Danielewski's House Of Leaves, Occultus Earth is an account of the findings of a small independent group of investigators initially focused on a mysterious barrow in Essex, but which leads them to a far greater discovery – a discovery which they claim to reveal nothing less than the cornerstone of all occult phenomena.

"No weapons can harm them. No prayers can halt them. No dawn can destroy them."

Of course, the basic tenet of all supernatural experiences is that unflinching 100% proof is impossible. Whatever the incident is, be it ghosts or psychics or Vodoun curses, the final reckoning usually comes down to the belief of the individual. Few occurrences are anything but the epitome of subtly, are usually veiled in some way and definitely contain no definitive evidence that can turn up at the police station in a pickle jar. So as the Occultus Earth storyline explores the discovery of a force which could be responsible for all the major branches of magic and religion, there is always a sense of a hoax, while also hinting at being the underlying explanation for almost every strange and paranormal experience on record; a kind of supernatural Ôall things to all men'.

Though there are many questions left unanswered, the story chronicles the uncovering of an ancient set of seals, effectively using the island of what is now the United Kingdom to imprison forces from two polar dimensions, of the multifarious unseen forces that manifest in the noumenal world and how they use us as hosts to enter the here and now, in exactly the same way as we use protective skins to enter outer space or the depths of the ocean.
